Edmonton 26 Ottawa 23. The clock strikes midnite on the Cinderella Rough Riders 1981. Ottawa finished 2nd in the horribly weak Eastern Conference in 81 with a 5-11 record. With a huge 17-13 upset of Hamilton, JC Watts led the Riders into the GC. The Eskimos were an unstoppable 14-1-1 that year and were MASSIVE faves. The Riders struck first with a FG and then a shocking TD. RB Richard Crump (replacing the injured Skip Walker) was having a great game. Some inspired defense by LBs Ron Glassford and Rick Sowieta baffled Warren Moon and the powerful Esks offense. CBs Billy Hardee and Carl Brazley made key interceptions. Ottawa took a 20-1 lead to the half and the old vet Tom Wilkinson took over at QB for Edmonton. They regained momentum and Moon returned to the game. FB Neil Lumsden had a fantastic 2nd half, catching 9 passes on the day. Edmonton came back to tie the game at 23. Then legendary kicker Dave Cutler kicked a fg to win with about 6 seconds left. |

This is the ESPN Classic Canada rebroadcast of an ESPN Grey Cup broadcast to CFL viewers in the US. Instead of the usual CBC/CTV play by play team, Don Chevrier does PBP and Paul Maguire does colour.
This version has fewer edited huddles but has the scoring band at the bottom of the screen throughout the game. |
