Washington 19-17. Billy Kilmer, bloodied but not bowed, led a last-minute touchdown drive to push the Redskins past the Giants. It wasn`t looking good for the home team when, with less than four minutes left and the Giants up 17-12, Kilmer was smashed in between two defenders and wound up with blood streaming from his nose. He had to go to the sidelines, the drive died and the Redskins had to punt. The Giants were unable to muster a first down, but burned off all but 1:38 of the clock before punting back to Washington. Eddie Brown`s 45-yard punt return gave the Redskins great field position at the New York 42. Kilmer and assistant trainer Bubba Tyer had managed to get the bleeding stopped and Kilmer trotted back onto the field, albeit with a wound to the nose that would require five stitches after the game. Before getting the winning score, the Redskins first had to convert a fourth and ten from the Giant 23. Kilmer did this with a nice 18-yard pass to Roy Jefferson. On the next play, Kilmer found Mike Thomas for five yards and the go-ahead touchdown with 45 seconds left to play. Ken Houston`s interception in the waning moments killed the Giants` last hopes. |
