Washington 35-20. “It was one of those things,” said safety Ken Houston after this one. He was specifically talking about a play where he tipped a pass that Minnesota receiver Sammy White caught for a 27-yard touchdown, but he could have been talking about the entire game. The Vikings ran and passed at will and allowed the Redskins very little until it was apparent that the Skins would be headed home for the holidays. The Vikings got out of the gate in a hurry. On their first play from scrimmage, Brent McClanahan turned a simple off tackle play into a 41-yard gain to the Washington 25. Three plays after that, Fran Tarkenton threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to tight end Stu Voight to put the Vikings on top 7-0. After a Mark Moseley field goal, the Vikings went on a 21-0 scoring run to end the competitive phase of the game, brief as it was. After the pass that Houston tipped and White caught, Chuck Foreman scored on a two-yard run to cap a 66-yard drive that made the halftime score 21-3. It was more of the same in the third quarter, with Foreman covering the last 30 yards of a 51-yard drive with his second touchdown run that ended any remote possibility of a Redskins comeback. Foreman rushed for 105 yards on the day and McClanahan added 101 on the ground. After Tarkenton threw another TD to White late in the third quarter to put his team up 35-6, the QB took a seat on the bench to rest up for the NFC Championship game. A pair of Billy Kilmer touchdown passes in the fourth quarter made the final score a bit more respectable, but there was no doubt about who had dominated this game. |
