Football historians generally consider the 1948-`53 LA Rams to be the greatest offensive powerhouse in NFL history. In 1950, they averaged an NFL-record 38.8 points per game. In `51, they garnered 5,506 yards of offense in twelve games -- that`s 459 yards a game! Indeed, the Rams featured -- and actually alternated between, to success -- the top two quarterbacks in the league. In 1950 rookie gunslinger Norm Van Brocklin -- "The Dutchman" -- finished first in passer rating, and his established veteran mentor, Bob Waterfield, finished second! LA`s offensive power was throttled by this high-octane passing attack that featured both these quarterbacks and, additionally, the league`s two best ends: Tom Fears and the legendary Elroy "Crazy Legs" Hirsch. In `51, the latter of those pass-catchers tallied a record-1495 yards through the air, and tied Don Hutson`s record of seventeen touchdown receptions. As for Cleveland, they had joined the NFL in 1950 after earning top honors in each of the short-lived AAFC`s four seasons. Many predicted that they wouldn`t be so competitive in the established league, but Otto Graham led them to the Championshp Game against high-powered LA. Cleveland won. Now, it`s 1951 and these two teams are pitted once again against the other. Here`s excellent black-and-white footage of this classic rematch, narrated by Harry Wismer! |
