Comments: Nevada Las-Vegas 112-105. The national champion Nevada-Las Vegas basketball team came here this weekend undefeated in 19 consecutive games this season, with an average winning margin of 32 points. But some people still doubted whether the Runnin` Rebels could hold up on the road against a nationally ranked opponent, or withstand a down-to-the-wire game. The Rebels still can`t answer the second doubt, but they gave a persuasive answer to the first this afternoon by defeating Arkansas, 112-105, in front of 9,640 fans at Barnhill Arena. For top-ranked Nevada-Las Vegas (20-0), the Razorbacks (23-2), ranked second by both news-agency polls, represented the stiffest -- and some think the last -- threat to an undefeated regular season. For 20 minutes today, the threat was real. Arkansas led by 50-46 at halftime after having stifled the Rebels with full- and half-court pressure that neutralized the Rebels` feared transition game. But the Rebels stormed out of the locker room after intermission and took over the game. George Ackles, starting center for the Rebels, hit a jumper; the defense forced three consecutive turnovers and then forced Arkansas into a succession of bad shots that led to fast-break baskets. Before the Razorbacks knew what had hit them, they trailed, 62-52, with 16 minutes 3 seconds left to play. "As I`ve said before, we played the second-best team in the N.B.A. today, and in the second half they came out and proved it," said Nolan Richardson, the Arkansas head coach. Todd Day led Arkansas with 26 points, but with Stacey Augmon hanging all over him on defense and giving him fits at the other end of the floor, Day made 8 of 21 shots and barely touched the ball in the crucial opening moments of the second half. Another top player for Arkansas, Lee Mayberry, was stifled by Greg Anthony in the backcourt. Mayberry connected on only 4 of 15 shots from the field -- 3 of 11 in the second half -- and finished with 11 points. The Arkansas guards hurt the Rebels in the first half by driving; drawing the defense in and dishing off, usually to Oliver Miller, the junior center, who scored 9 first-half points. He finished with 22 points, 14 rebounds and 6 blocked shots. In the second half, Anthony, Anderson Hunt and Augmon cut off the penetration and helped force 11 Arkansas turnovers. "I don`t think there`s anybody in the country who guards the basketball the way our kids do," said Jerry Tarkanian, the Nevada-Las Vegas coach. "That`s what we did the second half. We just did not allow any dribble penetration, and they wound up taking a lot of really tough shots." Augmon scored a game-high 31 points and made 11 of 18 shots. Most of his points came on short bank shots and thunderous dunks as Nevada-Las Vegas began to get its transition game going. "Stacey is a great finisher and I don`t think they respected that," Hunt said. "They weren`t getting back and we took advantage of it." Richardson agreed. "I was really surprised to see Augmon," he said. "But he is one of the greatest, if not the greatest, players in college basketball." Hunt scored 26 points and Larry Johnson, who was held to 6 first-half points, scored 19 in the second to finish with 25 points for the Rebels, who shot 62.2 percent from the field in the second half. Johnson would have scored more but he and Day were ejected from the game with 2:27 left after some pushing and shoving. The altercation occurred after Day missed a shot. When Day, following up after his miss, bumped into Johnson as Johnson pulled the ball away, a foul was called. Day then appeared to take one swing at Johnson, and took another, hitting an official. Johnson moved toward Day but did not appear to throw a punch. "We just got tangled up," Johnson said later, attempting to play down the incident. "I`m not mad; I`m happy. We won." The Rebels` final margin of victory was deceiving. At one point in the second half, Nevada-Las Vegas led by 23 points.
