Saint Joseph`s men`s basketball team pulled off one of the biggest upsets in NCAA Tournament history when the Hawks defeated number-one DePaul in the NCAA Second Round in Dayton, Ohio. SJU achieved the 49-48 win on March 14, 1981 as John Smith hit a layup as time expired to stun the Blue Demons. It was the Hawks` first national television appearance. The play developed when DePaul missed a free throw with 13 seconds left. Bryan Warrick rebounded, dribbled through the Blue Demons and passed to Lonnie McFarlan, who then fed Smith for the gamewinner. It was referred to as "Fourth and Shunk", which was the playground that Smith frequented as a youngster.
