Comments: UNCC 67 vs. Kentucky 71 – The 49er’s lead late into the game, only to allow the Wildcats to find a way to win behind little known guard Reggie Warford. This is a classic from start to finish, with “Cornbread” Maxwell almost willing his team to victory. This Kentucky team features Jack Givens (20.1 pts per game), Mike Phillips (15.6 pts per game) and Truman Claytor (all 3 would lead the Wildcats to the 1978 National Championship). Rick Robey was also on this team, however, was injured and did not play. All four games are played at the famed Madison Square Garden. This UNCC team is led by Cedric “Cornbread” Maxwell, who is also named MVP of the NIT. The following year Maxwell will lead these same 49er’s to the NCAA Tournament Final Four where they lose a controversial heartbreaker at the hands of Jerome Whitehead and the Marquette Warriors. Other stars of this 49er team, coached by Lee Rose, are Melvin Watkins, Kevin King, Lew Massey and Bob Ball.
