The College All-Star game met its demise in 1976 due to the weather. A massive rainstorm prior to kickoff left the turf at Soldier Field puddled and wet. The Steelers took care of business as expected, by racking up three Roy Gerela field goals in the first half and then adding a pair of touchdowns and a safety in the second half. Eventually the weather moved in again and torrential rains forced a stoppage of play with 1:22 left in the 3rd quarter. Fans ran onto the field during the outage and tore the goalposts down which forced the NFL to conclude the game. Chicago Tribune Charities would not renew this contest in 1977, ending it after 43 years. Frank Gifford and Bud Wilkinson have the call. |
