Larry Matson and Jim Henderson have the call for this preseason game with the craziest kicking you`ve ever seen! With Rolf Benirschke not playing, Ralf Mojsiejenko filled in but had two extra points blocked and the other shanked. Later in the game when they had a field goal opportunity, Don Coryell sent in linebacker Billy Ray Smith to try the kick and he just missed. Then when they had to punt, Coryell let Wes Chandler kick it! For the Saints, a high snap on their late touchdown saw Guido Merkens run it in for the extra point. Then to top it all off, the Chargers drove down to the Saints 17 late in the game and Smith kicked a 34 yard field goal for the win...or did he? A flag was thrown and the Chargers were penalized 15 yards because a kicker cannot have tape on his shoe and Smith did. Wow! But wait, there`s more! Mark Herrmann tries a hail mary pass from the 34 and the receiver is interfered with at the 1! So now with no time left on the clock and the ball on the 1, Smith kicks the game winner barefooted! |
