Rich Karlis kicked a 22 yard field goal in overtime giving the Denver Broncos a 16-13 victory over the San Francisco 49ers at Candlestick Park. Karlis had missed a 34 yard field goal in the final seconds that would have won it for Denver in regulation. The field goal was set up when a Steve Young pass was intercepted by Steve Wilson and returned seven yards to the 49er eight yard line. Denver ran one play to center the ball and Karlis connected on second down for the game winner. The 49ers led 13-6 in the fourth quarter behind a Joe Montana six yard touchdown run and two Mike Cofer field goals. Denver tied it when John Elway tossed an eight yard touchdown pass to Vance Johnson. Elway completed 21 of 39 passes for 210 yards, the one touchdown and one interception. Sammy Winder led the Broncos with 100 yards rushing and Vance Johnson led all receivers with 85 yards receiving. Montana finished 12 of 24 for 191 yards with one interception. Young, who replaced Montana late in the fourth quarter was 0 for 3 with two interceptions. Roger Craig rushed for a game high 143 yards on 26 carries while Jerry Rice led the 49ers with 78 yards receiving. |
