Dick Stockton & Matt Millen call the game: John Elway threw a 43 yard touchdown pass to Rod Smith as time expired giving the Denver Broncos a 38-31 victory over the Washington Redskins. After a scoreless first quarter, Denver exploded for 24 points in the second quarter taking a 24-7 lead. Terrell Davis scored on a six yard run and caught an eight yard touchdown pass from Elway, Rod Bernstine scored on a one yard run and Jason Elam kicked a 20 yard field goal. The Redskins scored on a 36 yard run by Brian Mitchell and on a Gus Frerotte 5 yard touchdown pass to Marc Logan. Heading into the locker room for halftime, the Broncos led 24-14. The Redskins` tied the score with a ten point third quarter. Frerotte tossed a seven yard touchdown pass to Leslie Shepherd and Eddie Murray booted a 21 yard field goal. Davis scored again for Denver, this time on a one yard run giving the Broncos a 31-24 lead but Washington answered with a Frerotte to Scott Galbraith one yard touchdown pass. That tied the game at 31 until with six seconds left on the clock, Elway connected with Smith, scoring as time expired. Elway finished 30 of 47 for 326 yards and two touchdowns while Frerotte was 16 of 26 for 233 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. |
