Comments: A huge game for Barry Sanders and The Detroit Lions team of 1997: Barry Sanders ran for a game high 184 yards on 23 carries, scored the game winning touchdown and in the process surpassed the 2,000 yard rushing mark for the season and carried the Detroit Lions into the postseason with a 13-10 victory over the New York Jets at the Silverdome. The Jets took a 10-0 first quarter lead behind a Adrian Murrell 14 yard touchdown run and a 32 yard John Hall field goal. The Lions cut the deficit to seven before halftime with a Jason Hanson 44 yard field goal. A second Hanson field goal in the third quarter brought the Lions to within four points, 10-6. The Jets held that lead until in the fourth quarter, Sanders scored on a 15 yard run. Sanders came in needing 131 yards to become the third player in NFL history to surpass 2,000 rushing yards in a season. He gained the 131 and then some finishing with 2,053 on the season and joining O.J. Simpson in 1973 and Eric Dickerson in 1984 as the only running backs in the 2,000 yard club. With the win, the Lions also clinched a Wild Card playoff berth.
