Washington 20-13. A simmering quarterback controversy boiled over as Doug Williams replaced an ineffective Jay Schroeder midway through the second quarter and threw two touchdown passes to lead the Redskins to the win. The game was tied 3-3 with exactly seven minutes left in the first half when Joe Gibbs, going with his “gut feeling”, made the switch. Gibbs’ gut generally is quite accurate and this was no exception. On his first possession, Williams led an 80-yard touchdown drive that he capped with a 16-yard touchdown pass to Kelvin Bryant. Then, with time running out in the half, he moved them 61 yards for another touchdown. The bulk of the yardage on the drive came on the payoff, a 42-yard TD from Williams to Gary Clark to put Washington up 17-3 with 27 seconds left. Williams and the Washington offense cooled down considerably after intermission and Detroit had some opportunities to tie the game after Karl Bernard scored on a two-yard run late in the third quarter. In fact, most of the fourth period was played in Washington territory, but a pair of interceptions stopped Lion incursions inside the 20. Barry Wilburn got the first and Darrell Green made a diving, game saving steal with 1:04 to play. It was Green’s third interception of the game. |
